Some 250 of the 420 class' biggest sailing stars will be avoiding exuberant celebrations this new year as the 420 World Championships are due to begin on January 3rd in New Zealand.
Current world champions Carl Evans and Peter Burling will defend their title on home waters in Auckland and will be hoping to come up with a performance that belies their age.
The 15-year-old pair, recently named New Zealand's young sailors of the year, won gold at this year's championships in the Canary Islands six months ago.
"It will be great to be able to defend our title in home waters," said Evans and Burling. "It should be an awesome competition and a great challenge with the best 420 sailors from around the world. The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it."
Bryan Davies, president of the New Zealand 420 Association, said: "Our sailors' success at Gran Canaria this year has proved a great springboard into what is going to be a fiercely contested event."
"The fact that two of our youth sailors have dominated both the World and European event this year is also very exciting and what better way to start the New Year than with World championship success in our home waters."
Trials for the New Zealand team begin this Saturday (December 16th).
