The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is asking members of the public to respond to its own cry for help in the run up to RNLI SOS day on January 25th. Figures just released by the charity show that this summer alone, RNLI lifeboats were launched over 3,500 times throughout June, July and August and RNLI lifeguards aided nearly 8,500 people on beaches during the same period, while crews also rescued over 200 people during the devastating flooding. This summer's floods highlight just how vital the work of the charity is, not just at sea, but inland too, and volunteer crew members are now appealing to members of the public to do their bit to keep the charity going, which has running costs of over £122 million a year - £335,000 per day - but receives no government funding. Anne Maton, fundraising manager for the RNLI said: "RNLI SOS day is our national fundraising day, it is a fun day with a serious purpose and it is critical to get everyone's support no matter how young or old. "At sea, around the coast, on the beach or 50 miles inland, the RNLI provides a vital service for everyone. We rely absolutely on donations and fundraising to provide our 24-hour lifesaving service."
