Team Pindar’s Open 60 Boat
Captain, Nick ‘Nobi’ Black and co-skipper, Liz Wardley finished 7th
in the Figaro, Transat AG2R race. The pair arrived in St. Barts on Tuesday,
having spent 23 days at sea on the 3,170-mile journey from Corncarneau,
France.
The
race, which attracted 26 competitors, was won by Jean-Paul Mouren and
Laurent Pellecuer on board SNEF et Cliptol
Sport, who finished four hours ahead of 2nd place Solar.
Sojasun enjoyed an
excellent finish, moving up five places from 12th to 7th
place in the last 1,000 miles. Having chosen a southerly route early in the
race, at one point the pair dropped as low as 23rd,
however their decision paid
off once they began to take advantage of the trade winds.
Speaking from St. Barts
Nick and Liz were both elated and exhausted after their transatlantic journey.
Nick ‘Nobi’ Black commented: “Considering Liz and I had hardly sailed with one
another before, it was fantastic how quickly we got into a rhythm. To charge up
the fleet after being so far behind was really exciting. It’s been an amazing
experience. Liz was a great navigator and I have learnt heaps about the Figaro
class. “
Liz
added: “Nobi has been both a great sailor and companion over the last 23 days.
When Francois (Gabart) dropped out the week before the start, I really thought
my dreams of doing the race were over. Given the limited preparation time we
had, I think we both feel really proud to finish in 7th
place.
Nick will remain in St.
Barts until Monday, before returning to Gosport to resume his Team Pindar Open
60 duties, on Brian Thompson’s Vendee Globe campaign.
