A new radar promising to be smaller and more powerful than any other in its range was unveiled yesterday at this year's Marine Equipment Trade Show in Amsterdam. The 18-inch radar, which runs on 4kW, is said to be twice as powerful as its competitors as it has a five-degree horizontal and 25-degree vertical beamwidth with a best-in-class range of 35 nautical miles. Made by GPS navigation manufacturers Garmin, the new device is able to digitally process all its data internally via a digitital signal processor and this information is then presented on a marine network, made by the same company, which is compatible with chartplotters and multifunction displays. Dan Bartel, Garmin's vice president of worldwide sales, called the product a "breakthrough in marine radar design". He explained: "With four thousand watts of transmit power and an unsurpassed range for its class, the GMR 18 represents the pinnacle of innovation. And with a small 18-inch footprint, it's easy to mount on almost any boat." The unit also facilitates mini-automatic radar plotting aid, which allows boaters to track the bearing, course, speed and predicted closest approach of multiple targets ensuring that sailors have maximum awareness of their marine surroundings.
