Two experienced boaters had to be rescued by firemen on the River Thames in Oxford yesterday as high waters and strong currents wreaked havoc across the waters.
The weather conditions prevented Chris and Ian Wood from turning their boat around or sailing under Botley Road bridge in the north of the city, reports the Oxford Mail.
Two fire crews were called to the scene and spent half an hour lifting the couple to safety and they were forced to restrict traffic to just one lane along the Botley Road while they carried out the rescue operation.
"It's just so embarrassing - we're very regular boaters and mostly we know what we're doing," Mrs Wood told the local paper.
"The boat has had a thorough clean-out and we thought we'd just take it out and be back in time for tea, but the currents were too strong for us.
She added: We weren't able to get it away from the bank and I hurt my wrist."
