China has confirmed that a host of cities will be fighting to be nominated as a stopover port in the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-9.
Under the terms of the deal that secured China's inclusion, the country will also field an entrant in the race and the China Yachting Association will conduct work to promote the sport in the country.
Meanwhile, an in-port race will be held while the ships are moored at the winning location and a number of local promotional events are also planned.
Glenn Bourne, chief executive of the Volvo Ocean Race, said: "We are grateful for China's support in providing us with an opportunity to bring the world's premier ocean race to this region.
"China is a strong sports country with long coastline and millions of sports fans. We believe the race will heighten the interest and participation in sailing in China and Asia."
The 2008-9 event will be the tenth time the nine-month, 39,000-nautical-mile race has been held, with China's inclusion marking the first time that Asian ports have formed part of the itinerary.
